Big Sweep is an annual event sponsored by NC Big Sweep, a non-profit grass roots organization whose mission is “litter free water sheds”. They conduct year-round education to prevent litter and coordinate the annual NC Big Sweep cleanup event for the NC International Coastal Cleanup. Over 17,310 volunteers covered 1,480 miles of rivers, beaches, waterways and lakes. 478,687 pounds of litter and debris were collected and properly disposed of including: tires, appliances, bags full of trash, mattresses and box springs, fish and bird entanglements, piles of building materials, car parts, and furniture, to name a few.

Waste Industries was recognized and received a certificate for the most employee involvement in 2008!  Special thanks to all the WI employees that volunteered and also got church groups, girl scouts, and other organizations to pitch in.
